I'm dipping my toe into the Lana Del Rey fracas, with the Sirius XMU version of Video Games. It's been a while since I've seen such a polarizing figure in the music scene. Deep hatred, or deep nerd love, is all I've come across in my LDR experiences, nothing in between. I can only say, for myself, that there is far worse out there in the Pop Spectrum.

And yes, her attractiveness has undoubtedly made her a target. As well as the fact that she doesn't sit in front of a piano, a la Tori Amos, and perform any instruments. The whole, Lana Del Rey is actually "Lizzy Grant" issue, plus she comes from powerful, parental influence and success, yes, these can all be factors in loathing and ridiculing her, I agree.

However, you cannot deny the well polished product that is her brand of Pop music. The Born to Die video is an example. Her inevitable skyrocketing success, has just been stamped by an upcoming musical guest slot on SNL in January.

I must confess, I think a lot of these live clips seem more like a terrible performance at a small town mall, but hey...being a big star is often a work in progress.

Top 10 Things of 2011

I think 2011 marked a new low, in regards to the amount of blogging I've done...but having a baby seriously alters your life, and I welcome it. Look for EENC to get back to as much regularity as possible, in 2012. Despite the lack of posts, it didn't mean I wasn't getting hyped on the new that was out there. I just couldn't resist, so here's my top 10 for 2011:

10)A$AP Rocky "LiveLifeLoveA$AP Mixtape" -- What does Aesop Rock think of A$ap Rocky, I wonder? Either way, I am a fan of this Eazy-E look-a-like hailing from Harlem. Lana Del Rey attempted to add street credit, by saying she's a fan.

9)Arcade Fire's "We Used To Wait" video. -- I went to college with the gentleman who directed this video, amongst Kanye videos also in his resume. So innovative, I couldn't get enough of this when it first surfaced Google Maps.

8)Jay Z + Kanye West "Watch The Throne" -- Having a daughter impeded my wife and I from seeing the 'Throne' tour stop in LA, as I hear we missed a hell of a treat. Consolation: this album, that seems to be the product of two egos keeping themselves in check for a brief while.

7)Yuck "S/T" -- Hearing a band make a record that could've been in my adolescent era, along with the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr., etc., makes me have faith in the youth of today. This album, and subsequent deluxe edition sounds so brilliant to me, based on it's familiarity.

6)Portlandia -- The genius of Fred Armisen + Carrie Browenstein was such a pleasant surprise for me this past year. I can't wait for season 2, early in '12.

5)Forgetters "S/T" -- Blake's newest 3-piece incarnation provided a short 4 song EP, that much like Yuck, felt familiar, but so welcome in my book. Seeing them play at The Echo was one of my live highlights of last year, also.

4)Youth Lagoon "The Year of Hibernation" -- Quiet. Slow building. This record really does lend itself to the band's proclamation, "Music is meant to be listened to, very late at night."

3)Drake "Take Care" -- I can't believe this record ranks so high on my top 10. I can't even listen to the album as a whole. But the tracks that do stand out, really, really, really stand out. Judge for yourself.

2)New Look "The Ballad" -- 2011 is the year everyone went Gaga for Lana Del Rey, but this is my personal female sung anthem right here:

1)10.20.11 -- The day my daughter, Gigi, was born. Best day of my life. Best day of 2011.

Friday night is also okay for fighting...

Two great events taking place for you Angelenos tonight. First off, DJ extraordinaire Z-Trip will be at the graciously restored Hollywood Palladium tonight, for the L.A. installment of the Rock Boxx Tour, featuring De La Soul, Nosaj Thing, and Daddy Kev. Tickets are still available at Live Nation. Should be a wild party at the Palladium, as Z-Trip's live skills makes Girl Talk look like a robot...wait, I mean a Jive Turkey. Visit Z-Trip's official site, and check out his free downloads, even as far back, as his groundbreaking Uneasy Listening collaborations.

Check out an interview from last year, with FestThis.com, with Z-Trip. About 1:01 into the interview, a great mix of Z-Trip combining Jane's Addiction and M.I.A.

Port of Call

Here's a new track from the forthcoming Beirut album, The Rip Tide. Sure to make all of the critic's and blogosphere's End of Year lists, along the likes of Bon Iver's self-titled release, the album is already riding strong, with the release of the first single, East Harlem. I happen to like Port of Call, the album closer, which feels like it could easily have been on the band's 2006 Gulag Orkestar release.

Delta Mirror Remix, Reimagine, Redux

The Delta Mirror have been compiling a collection of remixes and covers by other artists for about the last year or so. They're ready and available for free download. New life is definitely breathed into the already wonderful Machines That Listen.

Also included, is a cover of And The Radio Played On, by their Chico, CA buddies, The Shimmies. Odd Nosdam, Busdriver, and Blue Sky Black Death, are some of the artists that take a stab at reworking the Delta Mirror. Head over to the Lefse Records site, to download the album for free.

Helen Ficalora, Liz Lemon, and my Christmas Shopping Debacle

In the almost four years my wife and I have been together, there have been numerous, oddly coincidental and eerie parallels to Tina Fey's Liz Lemon character on 30 Rock, and my own wife. From mannerisms, to "Night Cheese", and now the fact that Tina Fey and my wife are simultaneously pregnant, I'm always on the look out for what's next for them to share?

Prior to this past Christmas, I got the idea to get my wife the necklace Liz Lemon wears on 30 Rock, with of course my wife's initials on them. Research led me to Helen Ficalora, the designer of Liz's necklace.

I went to the Beverly Hills store, to purchase two, "V" & "G" letter charms, plus one 14K chain. Each alphabet charm disc cost $145, and the chain was $85. I'm not ashamed to admit that in this downward spiral of an economy has left my once respectable wage earnings, to something I'd never imagine I'd have to live off of, much like many Americans in this country.

So, the grand total of $375 + tax I would have to spend at Helen Ficalora was something I'd been saving for, for a couple of paychecks, before Christmas. Enter my journey to the Beverly Hills Helen Ficalora store. It's a well lit, quaint but elegant, boutique store. The help was friendly upon entrance.

The woman who ended up ringing me up at the register seemed frazzled. We all have our off days I thought, so no big deal. "Your total for today will be, five hundred...", she went on to say. My mind shut off at this point. Was there a higher sales tax in the wonderful city of Beverly Hills? I already felt like the prostitute version of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, upon entering the store...I don't do much shopping time in the 90210.

As my credit card was being processed, the young lady could not get over the confused and distraught look on my face, and realized I had in fact, been overcharged. She realized her mistake, and said she would simply refund the overage amount. I asked if it would be easier to refund the entire amount, and start from scratch, but she insisted this is their protocol. Long story short, she refunded the incorrect amount(which was less than what was stated on my invoice), which later caused me an overdraft charge. The refund process had also caused a suspension of funds at my bank (the week of Christmas shopping), and I was leaving the store with a bevvy of receipts, that looked like I was about to participate in a ticker-tape parade.

Well, I had taken to Yelp to relay the mishaps of my experience, to warn other HF shoppers, and even wrote the store manager an old-fashioned, mailed letter. Neither of which garnered a response.

Two weeks ago, I received a voicemail from a woman claiming to be Helen Ficalora. She wanted to speak to me personally, regarding what had happened. I told my wife, and her response was, "Yeah right. Mrs. Fields just sent me an email for that bad batch of cookies we bought last week." It turns out, one of Helen's children had been reading the responses at their various locations on Yelp, and passed word of what I'd written onto Helen herself.

Any person who has a spouse, knows that an opportunity to prove their spouse's doubts wrong cannot be passed up, so I called Mrs. Ficalora back. It was in fact, the real Helen Ficalora. She was genuinely apologetic, incredibly gracious, and a wondeful listener. She made no excuses for what went wrong, but really compelled me to commit to the rare excercise these days, of forgiveness. I was truly humbled that someone of her stature would take the time to reach out to me, directly. And listen to me. If only more business owners had the kindness of Helen Ficalora. And, the ability to understand that every employee is a direct representation of their image as a business owner.

Also, Helen graciously sent me a check to cover my overdraft expenses. And to boot, she sent me a little something extra, when she heard it was my wife's birthday coming up, as well. The truth is, she didn't have to do any of these things, but yet she wanted to. And did so, without any pretenses. She even confessed that she had "been dreading contacting me for quite some time", as my Yelp review conveyed an impression of me being fairly irate. Her honesty was incredibly refreshing.

The fact that someone of her stature, took the time to track me down, and call me directly, is something that is truly unheard of these days, and something I will always remember. I will always think of her good gesture, whenever I pass any Helen Ficalora store, look at my wife's charm necklace, or watch Liz Lemon on 30 Rock. Unfortunately for my pocket book, I think our household will be supporting the Helen Ficalora name for quite some time to come, which I will gladly participate in, given Helen's goodwill.

An exclamation point, to this story for me personally, is this article that I stumbled upon this article in People Magazine a while ago, that can attest to the nature of Helen Ficalora.

Shuffle Up and Deal

I like to pretend there is a magical musical goblin in the heart of my iPod that is in charge of making decisions like playing Gangstarr, preceded by The Velvet Underground, when on the 'shuffle' option. Just to remind me about the opposite ends of spectrums.

Well, the following two songs came about the other day, and now, I cannot have one without the other. The first song is from the Oscar winning soundtrack score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the highly emotionally stirring, musical salutation to "The Social Network". Check out "Hand Covers Bruise" below, to be immediately followed by...

"The Passenger Seat" by Death Cab For Cutie. Written approximately seven years prior to the release of "The Social Network", this Gibbard & Company track exists on a very similar musical plane.

To me, these two tracks are the musical equivalent of the party game where everyone writes down story fragments onto a piece of paper, and they are later put together to form one coincidental, and cohesive story.

It is important to note, you must listen to these tracks in reverse chronological order, to prove my theory. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, immediately followed by Mr. Zooey Deschanel.

Battle LA!

(This ain't no Jennifer Anniston movie, Aaron Sorkin!)

It's quite rare I get excited for an over the top action movie release, but these trailers for "Battle:Los Angeles" have put me in the proverbial shoes of a fat nerd waiting in line for Comic Con. The wonderful use of the eerie track by Icelandic musician Jóhann Jóhannsson sent me over the edge. According to the movie premise, L.A. is the last line of defense against alien invaders. Thanks for letting us down NYC, and SF! Cue Michelle Rodriguez's tough face!

Awesome New Republic, aka ANR, melds all that is good from bands like Menomena, Animal Collective, Yeasayer, and the hey-day era of Depeche Mode. The band is comprised of John Hancock & Brian Robertson, fellow graduates from The Frost School of Music, formerly the University of Miami's music program.

Unlike this writer, the fellows have taken their practical college education, and applied it to the real world. "Stay Kids" is like a genial by-product of Paul Simon's "Graceland" impregnating Hawthorne, California's favorite sons' "Pet Sounds", with a modern day spin. Check out my favorite track, from an all together great album, "It's Around You".

Never Forgetters.

Forgetters is Blake Schwarzenbach's latest project. I hope this one lasts longer than his last project, Thorns of Life, which I quite enjoyed as well. Rather than ramble on about whether or not this new material sounds more like Jawbreaker, or more like Jets to Brazil, I'll let you listen to "The Night Accelerates" below.

Blake is joined by former Against Me! drummer Kevin Mahon and bass player Caroline Pacquita. Seems like the same type line up as Thorns of Life, but I haven't confirmed if his bassist was part of the ensemble cast of "The L Word"?

One thing I can be certain about is, that Blake continues to build on his prolific punk rock legacy, with this self-titled EP courtesy of Too Small to Fail Records. Forgetters will be playing two L.A. shows next month. This aging music nerd is left to decide which night he will be attending? The 22-year old version of me, would have no-doubtedly already bought tickets for both.

Swedish PB & J

The Swedish trio continue their mission to prove to everyone, that they will be known for being more than just a one hit wonder. Here's the opening track to the forthcoming Peter, Bjorn, and John album, which has a release date of April 5th (March according to their official site). I'm reserving judgement until I get a real good listen to the follow up to 2009's "Living Thing", titled "Gimme Some", but the catchiness and harmonies we've come to expect from these three Swedes can be heard in "Tomorrow Has to Wait", below.

Top 10 Albums of 2010

(10)The Way Out - The Books - I like found sounds. I like The Books. Highlight of this album, "Free Translator".

(9)Treats - Sleigh Bells - After hearing what this act was comprised of, my gut instinct told me to dislike this at all costs! Until I heard "Kids" & "Rill Rill".

(8)Meet Me at the Munster Station - P.S. I Love You - Seeing what these guys look like, in relation to what they sound like, made me scratch my head. Other than, highly approve.

(7)First Four Ep's - OFF! - This punk rock all star team puts out 16 tracks, each clocking in under 2:00 minutes. Nostalgia is nice.

(6)High Violet - The National - For me personally, I enjoyed this more than their last release. Dark never sounded so comforting.

(5)The Brutalist Bricks - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - I was fist-pumping to this one all year. Ted makes NJ proud. Highlight song on this album for me, was "Bottled in Cork".

(4)Halcyon Digest - Deerhunter - I've always thought Deerhunter was an acquired taste, that took a little effort to really appreciate, as far as full albums go. I quite enjoyed this one though, and a few tracks even made my father question' "What's this?"

(3)Majesty Shredding - Superchunk - The much needed album from one of my favorite bands of all time, was highly welcomed in 2010. Mac & Co. showed they certainly still had the chops that I grew up hearing.

(2)The Suburbs - The Arcade Fire - The band of Canadians can seemingly do no wrong in my book. The exclamation point on this album, was my favorite music video experience of the year.

(1)My Beautiful, Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West - Yeah, I guess he's kind of an asshole, but Taylor Swift is a whore, no? I only keep up through TMZ. This album just has the goods. Highlight of the album for me, "Blame Game" featuring Aphex Twin sample.

Did I leave anything out? Most likely.

Vampire Weekday

If you like vampire tv shows, novels, movies, I may just look at you like you just told me you're a registered sex offender. With every judgement, there is an exception, and my exception is this Swedish masterpiece.

My "I think Vampire shows and movies are dumb" segue leads me to the soundtrack for "Vampire Diaries"...which is some ridiculous looking show on The CW Network, or something like that? The soundtrack features songs from Bat For Lashes, Placebo covering Kate Bush, Goldfrapp, and The Gorillaz. It also features the song below, by The Silversun Pickups. Vampy, and charecteristically fuzzy, check out "Currency of Love" below. Have I mentioned that Chris Guanlao is an amazing, Animal from the Muppets-like drummer?

Robot Love

Here's a track from the "I'm Here" soundtrack, a short film from Spike Jonze, which debuted earlier this year at Sundance. The film is described as a Sci-Fi Romance, with two robots in Los Angeles, who find love in one another.

The Lost Trees are a fictitious robot band in the film. The band is actually Nick Zinner, Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal, and members of The Moonrats. Sounds complicated enough? Neutral Milk Monday

The Suburbs and Halcyon Digest

In support of "The Suburbs", the Arcade Fire sprung into their first of a two night stay at the Shrine Auditorium, in L.A. The first part of their set covered much from the new album, while the band incorporated a healthy mix of songs from "Neon Bible" and "Funeral".

The band overcame some early technical difficulties, which set the tone for Win to be pretty loose most of the night. He even took a light-hearted jab at our own L.A. Lakers, but prompted the band to start 'Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)' before any audible response or disapproval from the audience could permeate the crowd.

Overall, the band was as entertaining and provoking as the previous times I've seen them. While I'm about to sound like an enormous dick for taking offense to people having a good time, to the people who were dancing as if they were in one of the terrible clubs on the Sunset Strip, don't act surprised when you get made fun of when you're showing off those moves in a context that doesn't match to the tune of songs like 'Intervention'.

The band was great, but the venue was a pain in the ass to get to, and the mainstream appeal of a band like the Arcade Fire cannot prevent people who drive large trucks with Dave Matthews Band stickers plastered on them, from clogging the very same streets the USC kids and concert goers needed to access to get to the show. 'A' for effort, 'A' for performance, 'C' to the Shrine for being the Shrine.

Growing up can be hard (on your records). In the last year, I've gotten married, bought a house for the first time, thrown around the idea of making babies, and stood pat at my crappy day job.

The stream of good music has been consistent, but writing with frequency has not. That's why I'm challenging myself to write for the next 30 days, with 30 songs in tow. Any lapse in days will be made up in the next day I write...I will do my best to avoid 29 songs in one post, 29 days from now.

ARCADE FIRE at The Shrine Auditorium

Tonight, the Arcade Fire will open a two night stay at L.A.'s historic Shrine Auditorium. I sure hate big shows, with droves of people, but I just can't stay away from seeing them tonight. I've seen them play at least once, for every album they've put out. Can't say enough about their live experience.

The Fall is officially here, and so is new television. Last night, FOX unveiled their return to smart comedy, by premiering two new shows, Raising Hope and Running Wilde.

Running Wilde comes from the creator of Arrested Development, and stars Will Arnett, aka GOB Bluth, also aka Mr. Amy Poehler, and that chick from Felicity and the Noxema commercials. The premise involves Arnett as a grown up, rich kid who can buy everything he wants, except that lost teenage love...enter Felicty's Keri Russell. It's like an American 'Arthur'. David Cross made a cameo last night, and I look forward to seeing more of the far fetched hilarity, to see what this series has to offer. Visit their official site here. Running Wilde is on Fox, Tuesday nights at 9:30pm.

In the preceding 9:00pm slot, Fox also premiered Raising Hope. The premise involves the main character, Jimmy Chance, raising a wedlock baby he made with a female crime spree murderer, who gets the electric chair, leaving Jimmy to raise 'Hope' on his own, with the help of his kooky family, played by Keanu Reeve's girlfriend in Parenthood, Martha Plimpton, Cloris Leachman as his senile great grandmother, and his father is played by this scoundrel, in The Road, Garet Dillahunt.

This unconventional comedy involved projectile vomiting onto baby 'Hope', antiquated baby car seats violently rolling around a back seat, and raver pacifier gags...what else can you ask for? Raising Hope airs Tuesday nights on FOX, at 9pm.

Enjoy these two shows while you can...we all know what the execs at FOX did to Arrested Development, after all.

Here's two brand new tracks I'm really enjoying lately. The first is a track from the forthcoming Film School album, titled "Fission". Here's two tracks, from two highly anticipated records. "The Suburbs" has an August 3rd release date, from the EENC favorite label of MERGE Records. Check out "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains). Win's lovely and talented spouse, Regine Chassagne takes the vocal lead on this track, a very Knife-esque song. "Somewhere"

Check out the trailer for the new Sofia Coppola movie, titled "Somewhere". It stars Stephen Dorff, who I consider to be the poor man's version of Christian Slater, who in turn, I consider to be the poor man's version of Jack Nicholson. It also stars Dakota Fanning's sister, Elle...seems like the Fanning clan has an agent ready in the delivery room?

Much has been said about Coppola's visual glitz in her films, while lacking any real depth. I do to this day, enjoy "Lost In Translation". However, I feel a lot of what the great Bill Murray brought to the film, Coppola ultimately took credit for. And I did enjoy "Marie Antoinette", mainly because I got to watch it at The Arclight in Hollywood, while playing hookie from work years ago, and was fortuitously sat next to Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman (name drop!).

CYRUS
John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei, and Catherine Keener star in this dark comedy for all of you kids who grew up with multiple sets of parents.

PREDATORS
Somehow this movie has been green lit, despite all the incarnations of Predators duking it out with Aliens. After Predators invading the Bay Area Rapid Transit system against Danny Glover, I guess the cast still hasn't figured out that Predators will leave you alone if you're not carrying a weapon? The good news is Robert Rodriguez directs Adrien Brody, Danny Trejo, and Laurence Fishburne in "Predators".

INCEPTION
And finally, Christopher Nolan directs Leonard DiCaprio, Ellen Page, and Cilian Murphy in the mindbending, and seemingly too difficult concept for me to comprehend, "Inception".

"That'll be $18.50, please..."

In an ongoing installment, we're gonna highlight some films set to be released this Summer, that has piqued our interest. Here's a few to get that proverbial itch in your pants going...

"Get Low" has a July 30th release date, and stars Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, and Sissy Spacek. An old timey styled movie, with an interesting plot...check out the trailer below.

My old college roommate was constantly teased for his love of such terrible excuses of entertainment, such as The Highlander TV series...however, he was unapologetic about it, as he himself knew how terrible it was, but would simply say, "It's so bad, that it's actually good...". Enter, "The Expendables". A film starring Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Austin, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren! You gotta see it for yourself. Sadly, you gotta wait til August 13th to get your testosterone hopped up.

And the last to be released film we wanna talk about today, is "The Kids are All Right", starring same sex movie partners Julianne Moore and Annette Benning, who meet their sperm donor from years ago, played by Mark Ruffalo. We love Julianne Moore as one of Alec Baldwin's "Bahh-stan" love interests on 30 Rock. Our favorite Julianne Moore quote from the last episode? (To Alec Baldwin) "You look like a gay mortician in that suit...". "The Kids are All Right" drew rave reviews at Sundance earlier this year, and releases on July 7th.

When I was a wee lad, I wore the shit out of a t-shirt my uncle brought back from that event, as if the more I wore it, somehow I was magically curing AIDS, which was also big in the 80's.

Rock The Bells

How fun is this album? Check out "Kids" by the highly buzzed, Sleigh Bells. This Brooklyn duo brings the goods on their debut recording "Treats". The duo consists of Derek Miller, formerly of Poison The Well, and singer Allison Krauss who was formerly in a teenage pop act called Rubyblue. I'm gonna give these guys a pass on these youthful blunders, as "Treats" is just that good.

While we're not even at the end of May in '10, I'm gonna tap "Treats" for album release of the year. Enjoy "Kids", kids.

Here's a really amazing new track, from a highly anticipated new album, from The Black Keys. "Brothers" is the third release on Nonseuch Records, and will be released on May 18th. A first listen of this record gives me a little bit more of the feeling I got listening to the initial release of "The Big Come Up" and "Thickfreakness" in the early 2000's, than some of the more recent Auerbach and Carney releases. The recording of this album took place in Alabama, which seems to factor in for the gritty and trademark bluesy sound on "Brothers".

Record Store Day!

Here's a track from The Thermals, in lieu of this year's Record Store Day, which happens to coincide with the second day of Coachella. Thank you, to all the Indio Valley goers who have vacated Los Angeles for the weekend. It will be nice to actually go places without insane traffic.

Give a listen to "Separate" below. It appears on a split 7" with The Cribs. A pleasant little pop driven ditty, The Thermals have been so good for, all these years. This is their second split 7" for Record Store Day, as last year they released a pressing with Thao With The Get Down Stay Down.

As I mentioned, Angelenos who wish to take advantage of the new found space to roam this weekend, can purchase this and many other great releases at our city's great record shops. For a list of participating stores, check HERE. Happy Record Store Day to all...and to all, a good night.

Here's a track from Mo' Wax guru, James Lavelle's project, UNKLE. "The Answer" features Big In Japan, not the Big In Japan with that kid from the "O.C." tv show, but this Big In Japan, from Baltimore. The track is from the forthcoming album titled "Where Did The Night Fall". The album also features guest appearances by The Black Angels, Katrina Ford from TV On The Radio, Joel Cadbury from the band South, Autolux, and Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees, fame.

The record is due out May 11th. You can pre-order the album from Amazon. On a side note, kudos to this kid who overcame the terrible "O.C." show to star in one of my favorite LA shows, "Southland".

"You, Flock of Seagulls..."

I remember the balmy night in NYC back in 2003, when I first heard "Losing My Edge", like it was yesterday. I remember the feeling of astonishment of hearing the 8 minute opus, detailing such relevant music, like a Wikipedia page, before my ears. Seven years later, and three official albums later, LCD Soundsystem is still relevant and educational to my senses.

The evolution of the band's sound from a primarily "Dance, Disco-Punk" label received from many earlier in the decade, is no better showcased than on "This Is Happening", which will be released via DFA/Virgin Records on May 17th next month. You can pre-order the album at Amazon.

From the David Byrne-esque delivery in the opening bars of "Dance Yrself Clean", to the furious beats coupled with James Murphy's spoken word style crooning on tracks like "Pow Pow", this latest LCD effort shows that the band can still deliver dance infused pop, while simultaneously showing off their 80's influenced incarnate pop standards. Shuck N' Jive

The next time I hear a band talk about the rigors of touring, rehearsal, and overall being in a band, I ask you to consider the size and scope of Canada's darlings, the Broken Social Scene. Sure these obstacles become exponentially easier when you have a great label like Arts & Crafts behind you, who will be releasing "Forgiveness Rock Record" on May 4th. You can pre-order the album before the May 4th release date at Amazon.

Its great to see the as many as 19 member act with a new studio product. The new album continues to offer much more of their layered, harmonic, and driving pop sounds. Check out "Water In Hell" below. Makes this fan of Superchunk, The Replacements, and the like type bands, wanna play any of the number of available air guitar slots BSS has to offer.

Also to consider...how productive could you be in the completion of any project, with say you and 18 of your friends trying to get along and be cohesive?

More Making Underground Raw Shit

Here's the title track from the forthcoming Murs & 9th Wonder album titled "Fornever". This track features Dogg Pound member Kurupt. The album features the incredibly slick and soulful production, which has become a trademark, of 9th Wonder. Kurupt also guests on the last track of the album, "Live From Roscoe's", a nod to one of this blogger's favorite places to eat in L.A.

Good hip hop is hard to find these days, but look no further than "Fornever". This record marks a wonderful addition to the body of work the Living Legends alumni, Murs has amassed. Who says all the good hip hop only comes out of the East Coast?

Here's a track from the new Bird & The Bee tribute album to Hall & Oates. I have an older sister who is responsible for my unrealized, subliminal love for these hits. Kudos to Bird & The Bee for also paying homage to the "Private Eyes" album cover, which I was far too familiar with, looking at my sister's collection of Hall & Oates cassettes, in the early 80's. Ted Leo & Rx
A great time was had this past Saturday night at The Troubadour, to anyone who caught the Ted Leo & The Pharmacists show. Along with showcasing tracks from their latest "Brutalist Bricks" record, Ted also managed to close the night with a great cover of The Misfits "Angel Fuck". I also enjoyed the awkward interaction that caused Ted Leo to ask "what I was doing" when I snapped the photo below, between the runway area of the Troubadour stage and the upstairs lounge, while Ted was speaking to the audience between songs. Its Always Dr. Dog in Philadelphia

Here's a track from the forthcoming Dr. Dog album, titled "Shame, Shame". If you're a fan of Dr. Dog, you've most likely heard the first released track from the album, "Shadow People". The rest of the album maintains their folksy, feel good roots, which often helplessly draws Beatles comparisons.

Check out "Unbearable Why" below. If you like having your life put into a Harry Nilsson frame of mind, this record is for you. "Shame, Shame" offers a number of toe-tapping, enjoying some libations with friends, brand of introspective rock. Here's the title track from the forthcoming Gorillaz album, titled "Plastic Beach". Mick Jones and Paul Simonon from The Clash lend their 'axes' to this track, which marks the first time in over 30 years they've shared time in the 'lab' together. Their portion of the recording took just one day to record.

The album boasts a stellar guest contributor line up, which also features Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Snoop Dogg, and De La Soul & Gruff Rhys. "Plastic Beach" is a futuristic, 16 song, sonic romp that vividly portrays a polluted world which our future children may one day inherit. But then again, they should be so lucky to have the pop creations on this record.

Here's the Delta Mirror's cover of "Blind" by TV on The Radio. This 8+ minute reworking offers an electronic makeover worthy of the moniker their forthcoming album is named after, "Machines That Listen". Covering a band like TV on The Radio takes a steady confidence and swagger, that is becoming very clear, the Delta Mirror possesses.

Tonight marks their first free show, of their month long residency at The Echo. They will be supported by another great and upcoming L.A. band, that includes friends of The Delta Mirror, Full Frontal.

If you want the chance to say you witnessed something brilliant, in the early stages, then you MUST go to the Echo tonight. The Delta Mirror has a tentative set time of 11pm.

Two Fist Pumps for Ted Leo!

Here's a track from the forthcoming Ted Leo & The Pharmacists record titled "Brutalist Bricks". The album is set to release on March 9th, courtesy of the always wonderful to indie artists, Matador Records. Check out their official Matador site HERE.

The album is not short of Ted Leo's trademark power driven melodies, encased in political commentary. Check out my favorite album track, "Bottled in Cork" below. The new record will give Angelenos a chance to check out Ted & The Pharmacists wonderful live show, on March 27th at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. Here's a track from an EP that was released last week, from L.A.'s own, Giant Drag. One of our crudest, wittiest gems in the city, Annie Hardy, has added three new songs to the addition of "Swan Song", which was written and performed a few years back on L.A.'s internet station GetTheFuckUp Radio, along with a great acoustic medley of Misfits songs, which we've featured on this site in the past. According to their official site, this EP is a collection of one song each year since their release of "Hearts & Unicorns", back in 2006.

Seems as if for a little while, the existence of Giant Drag hinged upon Annie's other half of the duo, Micah Calabrese, and his willingness to be in a full fledged, touring machine. Either way, we're extremely glad they are in the music making business at the moment. Check out "White Baby" below.

Having the privilege of catching Giant Drag at numerous shows in L.A., one of my fondest memories in the vast collection of Annie Hardy live banter, is her between song intro of a song, proclaiming, "This next song is about snorting a lot of drugs, and waking up the next day, covered in semen." Beware to hecklers, someone in the crowd attempted to retort, and Annie fired back with a dry, "Don't make me come over there and sh*t in your mouth." Highly disarming from the front woman who's small in stature, but large in gusto.

DELTA MIRROR
The Delta Mirror continue to blow up. They will be playing at The Echo this month, on February 24th. They will also be taking up a residency there, on Monday nights in March. WHO DAT?
There sure seems to be a lot of New Orleans Saints fans popping up in the strangest of places in the past few days. I'm just saying, they're a great team and all, and absolutely deserved the success of their season, and what a great way to repay the great city of New Orleans, with all they've been through...it just seems surprising they would have such an 'affluent' following...at least around some of the nicer neighborhoods I've seen in L.A. I just hope these same people, who may be perceived as bandwagoners, opened their checkbooks to the city a few years ago, when they really needed it.

iPhone RINGTONES
A friend of mine recently gave me a great tip for iPhone owners, and customized ringtones. Remember when phones used to simply just 'ring'? I've resorted to using the famous piano solo from "Layla" (featured in Goodfellas) for all my friend's calls. Follow the steps below, to turn any tracks in your iTunes library into your customized ringtone:

1)Select a track in your library. Determine the 20 seconds of the song you wish to use, in iTunes by clicking on the track, then right click. Choose "Get Info" then go to "Options" tab. Make sure to check the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" boxes. Set the time 'ins' and 'outs' of the song, totaling 20 seconds or so.
2)Highlight the new track, right click and select "Create AAC Version". Drag this track onto your desktop or separate folder.
3)Rename this track to make it a usable ringtone. You may have to first go to your Control Panel, click on "Appearances and Themes". Then click onto "Folder Options". Then click on the "View" tab. Then uncheck the box for "Hide Extensions for known file types". This allows you to rename the mp3 files (you may want to re-check this box later).
4)Go to the file on your desktop or folder, then rename the file from a '.m4a' file, to an '.m4r' file.
5)You can know drag this into your iTunes library, and it will be available as a ringtone. You just need to sync your iPhone when plugged into your computer, and the track becomes an option on your actual iPhone, as a ringtone to be applied in your settings, or customized for each contact that calls you.

Gazing into The Delta Mirror

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the frontman from an up and coming band residing right here in Los Angeles, The Delta Mirror. Craig Gordon, David Bolt, and Karrie K., known as The Delta Mirror, will be playing at The Echo later this month, on February 24th, along with Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound, Oliver Future, and Queen Kwong. More information about their show can be found at The Echo website. Their album, "Machines That Listen", will be released on March 19th, via Lefse Records.

EENC Blog: Following new bands progress and rise, has always been one of my favorite things about music. Knowing you guys toured rigorously, and seeing the process your record went through, of how you initially self-released “Machines That Listen”, and now have a label to put it out, plus word of an impending tour this year, can you talk about how the Lefse signing came about?

CG: Well I wouldn't say that we really self released anything. We printed some unmastered copies so we could eat on the road, but the difference between that and what goes into actually releasing a record is huge. So if you're thinking about downloading our record illegally just know that it's a bunch of unmastered mp3's that someone uploaded. Lefse has been amazing. Ryan Kofman manages a great band called voicesvoices and apparently he hipped Matt Halverson to us. It was really casual. We talked on the phone a lot about music, had a few beers together and that was that.

EENC: Listening to the record, I picture the musical components as a metaphor to someone standing in Tokyo or Times Square, with the bustle of life moving around them chaotically (which represents the music and instrumentation), while the storyteller, or vocalist is subdued and calm throughout this chaos. Much like old 4AD Records stuff such as This Mortal Coil, or even how M83 produces such an ethereal sound amidst such a layered atmosphere. Can you talk about your influences as an artist, and the creation of “Machines That Listen”?

CG: A lot of Sigur Ros and Radiohead. I think our inspirations fight each other sometimes. Dave and I both grew up listening to mostly hip hop. We still do, but one of the things we never strayed from was Anticon Records. We have a lot of respect for those guys. Another big inspiration comes from our summer jobs actually. We both teach at The Collective Sound music camp. The staff there is made up of the some of the best bands I've ever seen. I think Dave would agree that if it weren't for that camp and a band that works there called The Shimmies we would be at some bar talking about how we used to rap and DJ. I really like this record, but I feel like we were still figuring out what we sound like. We're half done with the next one and I think we figured it out.

EENC:
Knowing you for a few years now, you’re one of the few people that really appreciated and has a love for independent and underground hip hop, can you elaborate on how and if these styles and attitudes have in a round about way, affected your outlook and approach to The Delta Mirror?

CG: I think the biggest leg up that world has given us is the freedom from a traditional band format. We were always just making music in our living room. Eventually it progressed to a place where we wanted to play it live, but we were able to skip the "lets start a band" part. We had been a band for years, we just didn't know it until...well until we did.

EENC: In joining Lefse, you are now labelmates with Tape Deck Mountain and Neon Indian. It seems Lefse is pretty street smart with their roster and signings…with street smart in mind, who would win in a Puerto Rican style knife fight, with items made and constructed from everyday objects found in an alleyway? The Delta Mirror or Tape Deck Mountain?

CG: A Grave with No Name would come and shank us all. They're British. It would be like a Guy Ritchie film.

EENC: You guys recently garnered an “8” score from the notoriously tough Pitchfork for your track “He Was Worse Than The Needle He Gave You”, and you’ve also been featured in such great music blogs that have been around for a while now, like My Old Kentucky Blog. A few of the bios you have out there, outdated as they may be, state you as a two piece. Just for clarification, you guys are in fact a band of three, featuring my old roommate Karrie K., on bass. Can you talk about what she adds to the band? Other than Scottish genetic craziness, and someone who finishes all of your food and alcoholic drinks when you’re not looking, much like a boxcar hobo?

CG: Ask anyone who saw us when we were a two piece and they'll tell you we needed Karrie. I had written some bass parts and was switching between guitar and bass on stage. After our first practice with her we felt like a better band. She's way into 60's psych stuff which I think lends itself to our sound nicely. If you ever find yourself grooving at one of our shows it's because of her.

EENC: The Delta Mirror is slated to go back on the road again this year. Is there an official date and who will be joining you?

CG: We'll be hitting the Neon Reverb Festival on March 13th and then touring our way to SXSW and back. Hopefully The Shimmies will be coming with us. Then this summer we'll be doing a full US tour and there's been some talk about Europe.

EENC: You guys are also touring the old DIY way, which reminds me of the era of the late 90’s, when bands I idolized and admired would actually sleep on your living room floor, and drink all your beer in the middle of the night, given the chance. Describe the perfect truck stop/convenience store combo meal is, for the Delta Mirror on the road? One ‘entrée’, one ‘side’, and beverage of choice.

CG: Dave would get Nachos, Mambas and a Vitamin water. Karrie would get trail mix and one of those pickles in a bag. She wouldn't need a drink because she would just drink the pickle juice. I wouldn't get anything because I gambled all my money away in Vegas the night before.

EENC: Let’s talk remixes. Artists like Four Tet and Boom Bip have added an additional dimension to such great music out there, with a simple remix. It’s rumored that a remixed edition of “Machines Will Listen” will be released later this year. Can you divulge any of the talent involved in putting their spin on The Delta Mirror?

CG: The Alias remix is up on Stereogum already and it's got some of the most impressive drums I've ever heard. It's funny that you should mention Boom Bip because he's on the list along with Bomarr Monk, Odd Nosdam, Phaseone, City Light, Thriftcar, and Healamonster & Tarsier. We're talking with some others that I can't name yet, but we're really excited about it. We're also going to offer a collection of covers we've done as free downloads. I believe the first one to go up will be Blind by TV on the Radio.

EENC: I just want to say that I can’t think of a more deserving group of kids to receive as much praise and attention as you guys, and I really look forward to what 2010 has in store for The Delta Mirror. Any parting words or thoughts for your new, growing audience?

CG: See you around the galaxy...

Just wanted to personally invite, and let everyone in the L.A. area know about a great show, with a great cause this Satudrday, January 30th. Former Sunday's Best drummer and Kite Eating Tree guitarist Tom Ackerman, will be playing with his new project, Star Parts, at El Cid this weekend.

I will personally be in attendance, collecting donations on behalf of the Los Angeles Chapter of The Red Cross that evening, to benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti. Star Parts has graciously and generously agreed to donate their record, "What You Bleed is What You Get", to this cause. A $5 donation will get you a copy of the Star Parts album, along with a Star Parts sticker. The wonderful guys from Margate, will also be on the bill, lending a hand to this worthy cause.

We have some other great things in store for that night. A few record labels and businesses around the Silverlake/Echo Park Area, have generously agreed to donate some items for raffle, at this show. The 'Text Haiti' campaign has raised over 8 million dollars. The all star telethon last week raised over 57 million dollars. All of this possible, because of everyday, hardworking people, banding together for a great cause. The people of Haiti still need our help. Let's show everyone what this "ineffectual" and "apathetic" generation is actually capable of doing.

Come for a great cause, stay for great drinks, and a collection of generous, fun loving people. El Cid is located at 4212 West Sunset Boulevard, just east of The 4100 Bar in Silverlake, CA. Show starts at 10pm, doors at 9pm.

Do Not Support This Man!!!

This picture of me was taken a few years back, when I went to see The Silversun Pickups play on the Tonight Show. The funny thing is, I didn't even ask to have my picture taken...I was simply leaning on a clown car, that happened to belong to The King of Late Night Indian Givers himself. He came out to his car, and immediately assumed I was waiting for him, as one of his throngs of adoring 'no' fans. Hence this picture.

Most Americans would kill to retire. Jay Leno apparently, can wait. You'd think him tooling around Burbank, showing off his stove piper cars to the locals, would be enough for him to call it a day?

Tonight marks Conan O' Brien's last night on NBC's Tonight Show. Tune in tonight, for what will be a highly entertaining last venture, for what I, and all the other supporters of "CoCo" feel is the bittersweet end to a rotten deal.

Its not about the money, as Conan and staff have been handsomely rewarded. Its about an employer going back on its word. Its about some high level suits at NBC being out of touch, and thinking the general public will swallow whatever they spoon feed. Its about showing the NBC brass that, without the fans and viewers, they have nothing. Dick Ebersol of NBC, seems to be quite outspoken on this whole debacle. He has called Conan, chicken-hearted and gutless, in his criticism of Jay Leno, and NBC. He has also called Conan's version of The Tonight Show, "an astounding failure". Wait til this geriatric version of the abonimable snowman sees the ratings for this year's Winter Olympics.

Everyone can agree, that Jay is as funny as this past election's Republican tour rallies...actually, those were funnier. While Conan may have struggled translating his schtick to a more mainstream audience, his genuine effort to provide a truly satirical and relevant vehicle to late night is to be commended, and instead left unappreciated and misunderstood by Jeff Zucker and crew, who think they know what America wants.

So, spread the word to everyone to watch Conan's last NBC Tonight Show. Tell your friends who are Nielsen families to watch! Hell, host an impromptu viewing party.

On a side note, is it too vindictive to possibly tell the loyal Conan fans to try to get Tonight Show taping tickets starting on March 1st, and formally protest Jay Leno's return to The Tonight Show? To have everyone in the studio audience sit on their hands, in silence, in response to the out of touch comedy of Jay Leno? Maybe give the NBC execs something to fret about? Stranger movements have started online.

Best of luck to Conan, wherever he lands next. Grumblings have said HBO, Adult Swim, Comedy Central, or Fox as possibilities. I can't help but giggle, when I think that NBC's lawyers sat in a room somewhere, actually muttering the words, "You cannot take 'the masturbating bear' sketch to your next network!". Farewell for now, Coco...I can't wait to see the "Cone-Zone" on a network that does your humor justice.

An Open Letter to LA Radio Station KROQ

Dear KROQ,

I just want to start off by saying, I used to love you...and I mean a lot. Back in the early 1990's, you were this awkward teenager's only friend. You introduced me to the timeless music of P.I.L., Siouxie and The Banshees, The Ramones, and countless other artists that I still love today.

When I moved away to college, in 1996, we naturally drifted apart, as I could not get to you, such as with today's technology. This same technology has afforded me the chance to re-visit you, my old flame, from the confines of my daily, hellish cubicle.

Over the last couple of days, I was horrified to hear the following sampling of music, over the span of a few hours: "Interstate Love Song" by Stone Temple Pilots, some awful, unidentified song by The Offspring, a track from Weezer's first album, some even worse Red Hot Chili Peppers song from "Dani California", three songs from Sublime, almost every single from Nirvana's "Nevermind" album, and to top it off, some Papa Roach.

KROQ, do you have live deejays? Or is a robot programmed to play songs from 16 years ago, on constant rotation, all day, everyday? You used to be a pioneer. You used to deserve to dub yourself as "World Famous". Did I outgrow you? Surely. Did you grow up whatsoever? Clearly not.

You've done nothing to further yourself, or the state of rock music. It really is embarrassing. Not until a contemporary band like Phoenix or The Silversun Pickups becomes engrossed in the mainstream, will you give them attention. You used to springboard bands into great heights, is this too much work these days?

There are a few highlights that remain in your programming, however. Rodney on the Roq will forever be an LA staple, although we've heard he's had a bumpy relationship with you in the past. We also like Kat Corbett for highlighting a few of LA's local acts that are worth noting. Other than that, you are the creepy uncle who never married, and is hopelessly living in the past (as I write this piece, a quite terrible Blink 182 song is being played on the air).

My dream job has always been to take a huge station like KROQ, and give an overhaul to its programming, thus providing the wonderful city of Los Angeles a great place to hear music, first...again. Because what we have now is unacceptable. If not me, how about any of the wonderful personalities this town has to offer, broadcasting on much more humble frequencies?

Jay-Z - "The Blueprint 3"
We just can't get enough of Sean Carter and his love for the NYC. While many fans prefer the Jay of old, and the fact that there are some holes in this album that leave more to be desired, we still can't help but dig when he delivers on this record. The fact that he dragged his wife, "BK", to indie rock festivals also won our hearts. Plus, this great Rhapsody commercial appeases to the days of yesteryear. Here's some "Eye Candy" we liked this year:

"500 Days (of Summer)"
Given the director's track record of terrible music videos, how much we dislike Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and what has become Zooey Deschanel's obligatory singing of a song in each movie she appears in, this one registered high on our list. The awkwardness of a male attempt at "chercher la femme" made this one entertaining in the realm of romantic comedies.

"The Hangover"
What more could you ask for, with the talented and funny Ed Helms, the always hilarious Zach Galifianakis, and Bradley Cooper as the guy who just looks like a dick? For Zach, the added dimension of weirdness in his character sets this role apart from his past cinema bombs...i.e. "Out Cold". Our favorite quotable from Zach' "They gave out rings at the Holocaust?"

"Inglourious Basterds"
We haven't been staying up to speed on Quentin Tarantino's kung fu or double feature gore fest rip offs, so this remake was quite a refreshing surprise. A great cast, headed up by Eli Roth and Brad Pitt, makes us wish this over the top exploit was how the war really turned out. An affinity for Hogan's Heroes doesn't hurt either.

Also notable: Bored To Death, Paper Heart, Ballast, Sin Nombre, The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Medium-Fi

Is there such a thing as Medium-Fi? Here's a track from the forthcoming self-titled Broken Bells record, which is comprised of DJ Dangermouse and Shins frontman James Mercer. Seems like the collaboration from the ceased and desisted "Dark Night Of The Soul" record , left some unfinished business between these two. The album takes all of The Shins' great pop sensibilities, which then becomes mastered by Dangermouse's supreme ear for the sublime. To me, listening to this self titled release is like driving through a late night desert with the top down, while being possessed by Roy Orbison, then taking a detour into an alternate galaxy, all while listening to a Gary Numan record.

This album won't see the light of day until March 9th, but you can pre-order it from Amazon HERE. Listen to the very fitting "The Mall & The Misery", dedicated to all those who waited til the last second this year.

Here's two tracks in the aftermath of President Obama's speech last night, calling for an increase in troops in Afghanistan. Didn't we win all those wars already? We had that big ceremony where W dressed like an action figure, on top of that destroyer, all those years ago. Looks like more fodder for Glenn Beck and company.

Check out the first track "Intro", from The XX, featuring Jimmy Jams of Brother Reade on vocals of this remix, in reference to World Wars Three and Four. I can't stress how lucky the city of L.A. is to be blessed with Brother Reade.

And lastly, here's a track from the pride of Hoboken, New Jersey's Yo La Tengo. Its a cover of a Sun Ra track, titled "Nuclear War". I read some time ago that the band members coerced their nieces and nephews to help record this track, without telling their parents of the obscenities involved. There's something refreshing about hearing a chorus of kids chant, "It's a motherfucker!". Give a peep to the track below.

Saturday night marked the 10th "birthday" of the inception of Peter, Bjorn, and John as a band. They celebrated this achievement by concluding their tour at Club Nokia. The set list provided crowd favorites from their latest "Living Thing" as well as 2007's break out record, "Writer's Block".

Highlights of the night included Los Angeles, via Cincinnati, musician Boom Bip joining the boys on the bongo drums for a rendition of "Young Folks", which also included Lykke Li on guest female vocals. The "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" adopted theme of "Nothing to Worry About" was impressively backed by a chorus of ladies, that the boys seemingly referred to as "The Los Angeles Women's Choir". Seemed like I lost something in the translation, as these ladies were probably more specific to a chapter in our fair city.

I always like catching the last night of tours. It feels like the last day of class, or watching your friend graduate or get out of jail. Saturday night was no exception. After the show, the band graciously hung out at the merch table to autograph items for their adoring fans. A great wrap up, to a great "birthday" tour.

Proper L.A.

Just wanted everyone in L.A. looking for a to do this Thursday night, to check out a great show, from London-Transplant, now L.A. inhabitant Samuel Stewart. He is the offspring of Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. Fans of The Decemberists and The Thermals should check out this British Import. See show flyer below, and give a listen to "The Beginner". You can also check out Samuel Stewart's MySpace page HERE. Stewart will be playing at Spaceland and The Silverlake Lounge next month.

A little side story about the offspring of famous musicians: A few years ago, I was privileged to see The Police on their reunion tour, with front row seats. Opening for them, was Sting's son's band...let's just say he had to endure drunken berating about how it probably took Sting several hours to produce what was now onstage playing severely bad prog rock. From the sounds of Samuel Stewart's EP, he will not be subject to the same fate.

I took my now wife, then girlfriend, to see the Canadian duo at the Orpheum Theater in downtown LA about two years ago. We had seats two rows from the front of the stage, dead center. Also last night, Sunny Day Real Estate graced Los Angeles, by playing a show at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. They sounded quite tight, dusting off a setlist comprised of a lot of "Diary" and "LP2", which made me pretty happy. Also, The Jealous Sound did a quite admirable job opening up, with the help of Coco B's drummer, and buddy of this blog, Bob Penn. A great show for those who felt like reminiscing.

On a side note, I'm incredibly excited to see this movie. My ADHD addled childhood prevented me from actually reading this book. Also, I'm that guy with lots of books on his bookcase, that was mostly an illusion used to impress women when I was younger, and to make them think I read a lot of books. It also took me many years to actually finish "On The Road"...probably as long as it took Jack K. to actually write it.

First off, fans of LOST hopefully checked in for last night's premier episode of "Flash Forward". This show has got the goods. This great premise is based around the global wide event of people losing collective consciousness simultaneously for 137 seconds. This Sci-Fi drama includes a cast featuring The Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane, and John Cho from White Castle fame. It's on Thursday nights on ABC, at 8pm.

Here's a song off of the forthcoming Bad Lieutenant record, titled "Never Cry Another Tear". This group features New Order frontman Bernard Sumner on vocals. The album is pretty straightforward, rock record. Maybe along the lines of one of the least fan favorite albums by New Order, "Republic". I do like the following track featured below, but I do even favor one of Bernard's other side project's more, Electronic. I've never been a huge Flaming Lips fan. It always struck me as strange that they achieved their current status, even after creating THIS. And, is that Wayne dude still rolling on top of the audiences at festival shows in that big bubble? However, I am liking what I'm hearing from their forthcoming "Embryonic" record. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are playing The Greek Theater in Los Angeles tonight. I'll be there battling the atrociousness of the Greek's stack parking policy. For those of you who don't know what that is, it means I can't go home until the kid with MUSE stickers all over his car, leaves the venue and moves their car in front of me.

Pavement will be reuniting for what looks like one show only, so far, in New York's Central Park, next Summer. Details are available at Pitchfork. The Pixies are also touring in support of playing "Doolittle" in its entirety. They're playing two nights at the Hollywood Palladium in LA, in November. You can get tickets with an astronomical surcharge HERE. We would love it if The Stone Roses or Ride would be gracious to oblige to a reunion tour also.

They just recorded a song for that Vampire movie with that chick from "Panic Room", who touches her hair and cowers with her shoulders slumped a lot...you know, "shoegazing". Here's a track from everyone's favorite New Zealanders, The Flight of The Conchords. Their forthcoming album, "I Told You I Was Freaky", will be released by Sub Pop on October 20th. Pre-order is available through Amazon HERE. Everyone seemed to be pretty down on last season's episodes of FOTC, but HBO's recent re-runs prove to me, that it's worth a second viewing. Additionally, if I hear any more people complain about how "last season was not nearly as funny as the first season", I'm gonna have to track you down and leave poop on your doorstep. Too many people fail to consider the fact that the first season is comprised of a lot of songs they'd been working on for years, while the second season material was done in less time, in a progression. Great, now I'm talking like a Star Wars nerd.

Additionally, for those in Los Angeles, celebrating the long holiday weekend, I will be HERE on Saturday. Check out all the great bands at The Fuck Yeah Fest. I hope it's a great, safe event. So far, my biggest gripe is what seems to be several ploys to sell tickets on the quick, for slumping sales by the organizers. VIP tickets have been selling for cheaper than those of us who bought our tickets early. We have been given the 'option' of upgrading to VIP status for $45 a ticket, in addition to what already was paid, which hardly makes sense, because those same VIP tickets were selling for $21 a piece the other day. Dear Fuck Yeah Fest organizers, were there no Asians or Jews available to do the math for you guys? Do not fret, the organizers stated that everyone who bought tickets early would receive a 'special gift' for doing so. My guess is long beer lines and mysteriously aromatic port-a-johns.

Also taking place on the long weekend, I will be at Little Radio's Septembercamp. Performances by The Henry Clay People, Soko, and The Monolators this Sunday. More info can be found on Little Radio's site HERE.

For a while, one could play Boggle with the number of bands with "Wolf" in their names. Sea Wolf took it a step further by having a song with the word "wolf" in it's song title, as seen HERE, which featured Brian & Joe from the Silversun Pickups in the video.

"White Water, White Bloom" is set to be released on September 22nd, by the wonderful Dangerbird Records. You can pre-order it HERE. The album is credited to have been written solely by frontman Alex Brown Church. For those of you old enough to remember, he was in a 90's indie band called Irving.

If you haven't seen the videos, or read the news, Jay-Z loves him some Grizzly Bear. Sean Carter was seen in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon with Beyonce, taking in a Grizzly Bear show. His thoughts on the future of Indie Rock can be read at Pitchfork HERE. Luke Steele of Sleepy Jackson/Empire of The Sun fame does guest on the album's opening track of "Blueprint 3".

There's been a lot of banter on the internet about the state of "Blueprint 3". While yes, I agree there are a few songs that leave a little to be desired (mainly "Hate"), one cannot deny the longevity and prolificness of Jay-Z's career. His longstanding relevance since 1996's "Reasonable Doubt" is to be commended. The fact that the large majority of his body of work stands the test of time is a testament to his legacy.

(Volcano Choir modeling Snuggies?)

I like side projects. I really do. The notion that a collection of music lives on a different plane of where an artist's "primary" band's creativity exists, has always fascinated me. Portastatic, The Postal Service, all of The Wolf Parade sides...it shows the music and risk to try new things is just seeping out of people sometimes.

That leads me to Volcano Choir. It features Justin Vernon from Bon Iver, and members of Collections of Colonies of Bees. "Unmap", due out on September 22nd, is a collection of hauntingly gorgeous songs, that taps into electronic technology and sensibilities, in a subtle manner. "Unmap" is a visceral experience, that feels like you're witnessing an actual shaman perform a ritual to tame a fiery volcano.

I think the Gossip are pretty underrated in the grand scheme of things. "Music For Men" is a pretty great collection of songs, and should garner some year end honors, before 2009 is done.
